How to Improve As a Digital Artist

The road to mastering your digital art skills is long and often challenging. At some point, it feels like you have reached the peak of your abilities. What next? Where do you go from the top? Fortunately, there's a sure-fire way to improve your skills as a digital artist and become even better than you are right now.

You're never at the top of your digital art mountain

No matter how good you become, you'll never really be at your best. There is always room to improve digital art skills and understanding this is the first step. Moreover, people tend to overestimate their own abilities therefore it's important to keep your ego in check and stay humble through the process. If anyone praises your work, say "thank you" and stay focused on perfecting your craft.

You still have some fears to overcome

Unless you're a perfect artist with no flaws, chances are that there are certain things you avoid doing in your work. This usually happens when you have to do something in your work that feels uncomfortable. For instance, drawing a perfect circle or drawing a character that faces a different direction than you are used to.

It's perfectly normal to skip the uncomfortable bits and resort to gimmicks and hacks to get the art done. However, if you really want to master your craft, it's a good idea to make a list of everything you struggle with and get back to doing it later when you're good and ready. There isn't anything you can't do without practice.

Set time aside for improving your digital art skills

Practice makes perfect and that requires time. The key to improving your digital art skills lies in finding the time to do that. If you have a busy schedule then you need to sit down and organise your timetable. An hour a day is more than enough time to focus on things you want to improve.

Some people take it to the next level and get up as early as 5 AM to get some extra hours in their day. If that appeals to you then you should consider playing around with time in the same way.

Meet other artists

You can learn plenty from other artists. Communities like Deviantart, Reddit and Behance are great places to meet fresh new artists and also seasoned professionals. Additionally, they're free to join.

Join a community and discuss areas where you want to grow. Share experiences with community members and form a connection. You never know where it could take you.

Take a course online

This is probably the best way to level up as a digital artist. We live in the age of technology and our learning is mostly digital. There is nothing you can't find online.

Gaining digital art skills online depends on your budget and your time. If you want to do it for free, watch tutorials on YouTube and gain some knowledge. I suggest watching these 5 artists to get started. Alternatively, if you want some more structured learning, there are resources like Domestika and Skillshare where professional artists share their skills with you. Also, these sites have communities.

Enjoy the process
